Colin McRae’s 1997 Subaru Impreza WRC Test Car auctioned off for RM1.2million

Colin McRae’s Subaru Impreza WRC 1997 Test Car

H&H Classics auction house has just auctioned off Colin McRae’s 1997 Subaru Impreza WRC test car for a whopping £230,625 (around RM1.27 million). That sets the record for the most expensive Subaru ever sold.

According to the official auction listing, the car, chassis 001 was a test and development car used by the legendary Colin McRae for testing purposes and helped Subaru secure a third consecutive manufacturers title in 1997 in the WRC. The chassis 001 was also used as the press launch car.

“To many, the mid 1990s was the heyday of the Subaru World Rally Team. Following the drivers’ and manufacturers’ double in 1995 and a further manufacturers’ title in 1996, the blue and yellow Impreza was rapidly becoming the icon of the championship and Colin McRae one of rallying’s great stars. 1997 brought in a new era in the World Rally Championship, with the introduction of the appropriately named World Rally Car formula. While some continued to compete with what were predominantly modified Group A cars, the new FIA regulations provided an opportunity to bring new manufacturers into the championship, who otherwise were unable to homologate suitable road cars.” – Damian Jones, H&H Classics
