Well, in lights of the current SPAD’s clamp down on Uber and GrabCar drivers, there may be light at the end of the tunnel, as SPAD is considering whether to allow or ban these services.
SPAD’s chief executive officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah said, “We understand the solutions provided by Uber and GrabCar, and the sentiments of the people towards it.” This came after he was asked about the supposed plans to cease Uber drivers from operating, which includes blacklisting these drivers and preventing them from renewing their roadtax.
Taxi drivers are the most vocal when it comes to banning Uber and GrabCar, as some taxi drivers have claimed that they’ve seen a loss of 20% in the income.
Azharuddin mentioned that these ride-sharing services does not comply with SPAD’s regulations, but they are finding ways for a solution “towards this new technology“.
An online petition on change.org is calling for the support of Uber against the local taxi industry was circulating on social media, with over 3,000 signatures gathered as of today.
The Star also reported that Federal Territories and Selangor Taxi Association president Datuk Aslah Abdullah was not keen to allow any form of ride-sharing vehicles on the road. “That is something wrong. If you allow illegal taxis … it’s like the law of the jungle,” he said. He also mentioned that GrabCar and Uber vehicles should be subjected to the same laws applied to taxis here.
