It appears that Proton could be developing a wagon version of the Saga, as indicated by these spyshots. Why a Saga wagon when Proton is developing the Suzuki Ertiga you ask?
For starters, if priced correctly, the Saga wagon could be the ideal choice for small traders, especially those manning pasar malam stalls. The large rear boot allows them to haul quite a heavy load, and if equipped with rear folding seats, the possibilities are practically limitless.
Yes, we do know that the Suzuki Ertiga is coming as well, but that model, from what we gathered, is strictly a rebadge job. Powertrain is expected to be carried over from the Suzuki, as well as much of the interior.
This particular mule has 80% of the outgoing Saga’s body, except the new rear end. Even the roof looks rather complete, judging from the photos. In addition to that, it appears that the mule here has a recess in the tailgate, suggesting that the number plate will be positioned there.
In the past, Proton did toy with the idea of a Wira Estate, though plans for that was abandoned. Despite that, oddities like the Proton Arena did sell rather well, and used versions still command a good value.
Given that Proton will be launching another 3 more models this year, namely the Saga, Persona and the MPV, these photos could suggest otherwise. Watch this space for more updates!
