Around the nation of Spain, taxi drivers have been staging another round of protests to complain about Uber and Cabify, also a ride-hailing service operating in Spain. Some 3000 drivers are reported to have gone towards Madrid to vent their frustrations whilst there are minimal services available in Barcelona.
The issue of taxi driver protests still hinders Uber’s efforts to deploy further into the country. Initially, the courts in Spain did bar the service which was then overturned and now tensions have started rising with EuropeWeeklyNews reporting that more strikes may come in July.
El Pais reports that the Spanish Taxi Federation (Fedetaxi) has called for the creation of a publicly run digital platform that would allow customers to book a taxi anywhere in Spain, along with public-private funding to help drivers leave the profession and re-train.
Other reports do include that political parties and agencies have proposed that the Taxi Federation and Uber sit at a round table for negotiations.
