Chevron Malaysia Limited, which carries the retail brand Caltex has successfully completed its annual Caltex Fuel Your School programme (Caltex FYS) in partnership with MyKasih Foundation, this year benefiting over 10,000 students collectively in both Pahang and Kelantan schools.
In its 5th consecutive year, Caltex FYS continues to support teacher and students by ensuring these schools have the opportunity of quality education via enhanced learning materials and resources. Caltex FYS is also an approach to deliver inspiring classroom sessions for students to further promote the learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects.
“At Chevron, we believe that education is extremely important for an individual and the community as it provides the necessary tools and knowledge to succeed in life. The Caltex Fuel Your School programme aims to do just that, by partnering with local communities, governments and non-profit groups to expand learning opportunities and support social and economic development, which is part of Chevron’s global “Energy for Learning Initiative”, said Chevron Malaysia Limited’s Country Chairman, Shahid Ahmed (picture below).
This year, out of 49 classroom projects funded for Pahang and Kelantan, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil) Raub, Pahang and SMK Tanjong Lumpur, Pahang struck the most wins.
“I believe in empowering students and encouraging fun learning. As soon as I heard of the Caltex Fuel Your School programme, I encouraged the teachers here to work together in putting a proposal for the benefit of the school and the students. Having won the project funds, we are now able to improve our computer lab and support the development of autonomous robotics software and accelerate the learning of our engineering module. We are all so thankful for this opportunity, but more importantly, the students have been given a motivational boost to learn,” expressed Mickey Koh Meng Sei, a STEM Volunteer from Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil) Raub, who helped to coordinate the classroom project submissions for the teachers.
Throughout July 2016 to October 15, 2016, Caltex contributed RM2 for every purchase of RON95 or RON97 using the Caltex Journey Card at participating Caltex service stations in Kelantan and Pahang. A total sum of RM250,000 worth of funds were generated and used to fund eligible classroom projects in high-need schools in the form of learning materials for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects.
From the RM250,000 funds raised, RM18,000 was awarded to students from Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Chung Ching, Kuantan under the MyKasih ‘Love My School’ student bursary programme. Through this, daily school meals and learning materials for students will be supported for one year in 2017.
MyKasih Foundation has been working hand-in-hand with Chevron Malaysia to determine classroom projects that deserve to be funded through the Caltex Fuel Your School programme. MyKasih also guides teachers to frame classroom project proposals towards the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects.
