While we did report back in May that the Chinese-owner MG is looking to enter the Malaysian market, a report from our friends at Carlist seems to suggest otherwise.

Mr. Wu Han, President of the Chinese-Thai joint venture SAIC Motor-CP told Carlist at the 2015 Thailand International Motor Expo that exports to other right-hand drive markets is not SAIC’s priority for the time being.

We want to focus in Thailand first,” he said.

Mr Wu Han’s reply is quite a departure from SAIC’s earlier statements back in 2014, which mentioned that the company’s production plant in Rayong will produce cars for other markets in the region, which includes Indonesia and Malaysia. The plant is capable of producing 50,000 cars a year.

There was an MoU between SAIC and Federal Auto a few years ago, but SAIC has since denied it was in talks with anyone in Malaysia.

No, we are not speaking to anyone in Malaysia at the moment,” Wu added.

An anonymous SAIC executive told Carlist that the company’s sales were under-performing, as they had planned to sell 5,000 units in 2015, but had only sold 1,890 units till September 2015.
