Volkswagen has abandoned all development work on its 10-speed DSG, due to high cost and complexity concerns. This was mentioned just 2 years after the gearbox was announced at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Speaking at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show, the unnamed source claimed that the gearbox, which was due to enter the Golf and Polo next year, has been killed because of high cost and complexity concerns.
“It’s a very expensive development and it’s very complex. In the end, we had to balance what our priorities were with our transmissions and other things are more important and more urgent,” the source told motoring.com.au.
The supposed 10-speed DSG was said to be able to handle up to 500 Nm of torque, and was also conceived as a fuel-saving strategy. If the DSG wasn’t shelved, it would have found its way into other VAG brands, including Audi, Skoda, Seat and Volkswagen. The hot Golf R400 was also slated to receive the 10-speed DSG.
Whether or not this move will affect future gearbox development works is yet to be seen. At the moment, the gearbox in VAG’s stable with the most gears is the 7-speed DSG.
