Formerly known as the Malaysian Super Series (MSS), the newly renamed Malaysia Championship Series (MCS) will be sporting some new regulations to keep the series up to date.
The biggest difference is that competitors are now required to use semi-slick tires. Apart from that, there will also be ballast weights for podium finishers starting from Round 2. Lastly, a new point system has been introduced for the championship calculation.
While some drivers and teams have their doubts about the new regulations, the rest of them generally accepted the changes. Damien Dielenberg, two-time defending Touring Production class champion has described the changes as “interesting”. He said, “We will be defending our title in 2015 but it is going to be a tough year in view of the increased competition. In view of the rule changes, race strategy will be more important.”
Wing Hin Motorsports team leader Kenny Lee said, “With the tyres changed to semi slick, we hope to be able to make an improvement for the 2015 championship. While the Sepang 12 Hours remains our team’s main focus, we will continue to improve our race craft throughout this season.”
Meanwhile in the Malaysian Touring Car (MTC) category, Proton Motorsports and Tedco Racing continues continues to battle for glory. Both teams have completed their test sessions earlier this month and was pleased with the outcome.
James Veerapan of Proton Motorsports said, “The good news is we’re trying some new parts and methods. The bad news is that I can’t tell you how much we’ve improved. All that I can say is that the team is happy with the test over the last two days. We should be faster this year than 2014 – that is the aim, and it will remain so throughout.” Tedco Racing driver Mark Darwin said, “We are still in discussion with our sponsors on our race plans.”
