Since the first Volkswagen dual-clutch gearbox was introduced back in 2003, the ‘DSG’ has developed into an international success due its smooth-shifting and fuel-efficient characteristics. Following this success, Volkswagen made an ambitious plans to introduce a newly developed 10-speed DSG for engines with up to 550Nm of torque in its future models.

Currently, there’s no word yet on when we can expect to see it put into production, however at its recent 2014 Innovation Workshop held in Wolfsburg, Germany, Volkswagen stated its intention of becoming the world’s most sustainable car company by 2018 and outlined many of the technical solutions that will help along the way. The highly efficient layout of its gear steps will contribute towards reducing fuel consumption.

Another fuel saving measure is with the introduction of new high-tech engines such as the 236hp bi-turbo diesel showcased in the all-new Passat. With a power density of 118hp per litre of displacement, it is the most powerful of any four-cylinder TDI that has ever been put into production. What makes the new engine so impressive is that VW can get even more out of that engine – as much as 268hp by using a variable valve timing, further optimised by gas exchange cycles and an electric booster.
