The Road Transport Department (RTD) announced that it will conduct a nationwide crack down beginning 1st Oct 2014 against individuals providing transportation services using the Uber application, reports The Star.
JPJ director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said that private vehicles found providing the taxi-like services would be impounded between RM1,000 and RM10,000 or jailed up to a year for the offence under Section 16 of the Land Public Transportation Act 2010.
“The public should aware that by using private vehicles as taxi, they are not covered by any insurance should they get involved in any accident,” said Ismail Ahmad in a statement.
“It is similar to teksi sapu or illegal (pirate) taxis and that is why we are taking action to stop it,” he added. Ismail added that taxis and limousines from licensed operators using the Uber application would not be affected.
