So here I was sitting in a VW Golf Mk7 taking it for a test drive while waiting for my group to start at yesterday’s TimeToAttack event and I started chatting up the sales advisor about the latest Golf R Mk7 and she told me that the units are already in Malaysia undergoing the usual JPJ rounds.
When I asked her for a little bit more information such as expected pricing and launch date, she wasn’t sure. Based on her guesstimates, since next week is the launch of the Jetta CKD models, perhaps the launch of the Golf R could be held the week after or two weeks from now. Nothing yet is confirmed but I can’t wait to test out the Golf R as I loved how the new Golf GTI Mk7 feels.
The price tag hasn’t been set yet while rumours are flying about that it may be set at RM300,000 it could be set lower as well. Take the Golf R Mk6, the first known pricing for that particular car was when a recon dealer brought in a unit and set the price at RM320,000 before Volkswagen Malaysia officially sold the car. Now the price is way below RM300,000 for the current Golf R which is still available for sale at the dealerships.
The new car is powered by a newly configured 300 PS TSI engine, which is not only 30 PS more powerful, but also 18 per cent more fuel-efficient than the previous engine. Its maximum torque was boosted by 30 Nm to 380 Nm.
