Mitsubishi is set to put an end on the production of the iconic Lancer Evolution this year. The current Lancer Evolution X, which has been in production since 2007, was overdue for a replacement, but there was no news on the next generation Lancer Evolution to be heard.
“Mitsubishi Motors does not have any plans to design a successor with the current concept, as a high-performance four-wheel-drive gasoline-powered sedan,” said spokeswoman Namie Koketsu, which pretty much confirms that the next generation Lancer Evolution will not be.
However, she added that the company would “explore the possibilities of high-performance models that incorporate electric vehicle technology” but did not elaborate in much detail.
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution needs no introduction to petrolheads in Malaysia. As the car that inspired many of the souped-up Proton Wiras on the roads and was seen in many Jackie Chan movies in the 90st, the Lancer Evolution will be fondly remembered as the car that won four World Rally Championship (WRC) titles.
Contrary to its name, it seems the “Evolution” is set to stop, evolving.
