Tim Cook says that Didi Chuxing, the ride-hailing company in China is working on technology which could improve traffic through algorithms. In a profile piece to TIME, Tim Cook hailed Didi Chuxing President, Jean Liu, a disruptor in transportation that offers “convenience and flexibility” to millions of customers.
It is no wonder why Apple has invested $1billion into Didi Chuxing with Apple earning a seat at the board as well.
“She and her team are succeeding with innovative, big-data algorithms that aim both to improve the efficiency of Didi’s service and to ease the congestion on roadways. By analyzing commuter patterns the way oceanographers track the tides, Didi may help traffic jams go the way of the flip phone.
In over 400 cities across China, Jean has also built a company that is dedicated to serving the community around it. Guiding Didi to this higher purpose, and giving back to the places where it does business, she shares my belief that companies can and should measure themselves by more than just the bottom line.” – Tim Cook
Tim Cook met with Jean Liu in 2016 when Apple made the huge investment back in China. It seems that Apple, who also has a vested interest in autonomous car, may want to look at the overall picture in terms of underlying technology especially algorithms that help manage traffic as a whole.
