Taxi drivers in Malaysia are a unhappy bunch, as they plan to protest for not one, not two, but six days over SPAD’s decision to legalize ride-sharing platforms like Uber and Grab.

Malaysian Taxi Drivers’ Transformation Association (Pers1m)’s president, Kamaruddin Mohd Hussain said that taxi drivers are unhappy with the Cabinet’s decision to allow SPAD to regulate Uber and Grab, which Pers1m claims already hurts the taxi industry.

Pers1m has yet to determine the date of protest, as they claimed that tension between taxi drivers and ride-sharing services continue to spiral. In addition to that, Pers1m cites that ride-sharing platforms creates an unfair playing field for taxi drivers by “stealing” customers. Taxi drivers also added that licensing and regulatory requirements put them at a disadvantage against ride-sharing platforms.

Last week, it was announced that the government has given SPAD the greenlight to regulate ride-sharing platforms. Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai added that the taxi industry will be deregulated.

SPAD is expected to release more details this week.
