Volkswagen to Collaborate with Tata to Develop Budget Car

Die neue Volkswagen Studie twin up

When the emission scandal broke out, many of Volkswagen’s ongoing projects were put on hold to address the immediate issue at hand. Now that the worst seems to have passed and Volkswagen has finally managed to regain its composure after the scandal, the company looks set to restart some of its older projects to gain back the trust and market that it lost over the months.

Among these is the Budget Car project, on which the company has been working on for quite some time now.  Indian automaker, Tata Motors is well known for producing budget cars in India, so it comes as no surprise when Volkswagen was reported to be having talks with Tata Motors for a development of a new low-cost car. Both companies are currently negotiating but it still remains unclear, at the moment, whether VW will develop the model with help from Tata Motors, or if the latter will be in charge of the project entirely.

Details on the budget car are scarce at the moment but it is expected to be sold in emerging markets such as India and China from 2018. Given that it is a low-cost budget car, the vehicle will likely lack features like a multitude of airbags or auto air conditioning, which will probably be found on the options list. It would cost roughly between €6,000-8,000 (RM27k – Rm36k).
