The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is officially dead. Long live, the ASX Evolution. Confused? Read below to find out why we say, the next generation ASX will be the next Evo.
It was reported at a UK auto site that Mitsubishi won’t be “Evolving” with the new Evo XI. Instead, a new high-performance hybrid SUV will be taking over. Very likely, it is inspired from XR-PHEV Evolution concept we shared at AF a few months back.
“It will not exist as we know it,” he said. “It will be replaced in spirit by an SUV with high output,” said Mitsubishi product boss Kanenori Okamoto at the Paris Motorshow.
The new SUV will incorporate the technologies inspired from Mitsubishi’s Pikes Peak winning car, the MiEV Evolution. This includes the Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) four-wheel-drive system, the Lancer Evolution’s all-wheel drive system that craves Mitsubishi’s name in the world rallying.
Mitsubishi’s further flirtation with SUVs and pick-ups will continue in 2016 with the planned launch of a new generation ASX crossover and the Triton. These two new models are set to be incorporated with Mitsubishi’s electric hybrid technologies as well. Despite that, Mitsubishi remained mum on plans to replace the aging Lancer saloon model.
Also, the XR-PHEV concept Mitsubishi previewed in Beijing (pic above) is set to inspire the second generation ASX crossover. With the XR-PHEV Evolution that was previewed in Grand Turismo 6 videogame, yes folks, that car will become the next Mitsubishi Evolution SUV!
