Since taking over from VCM the as the official Volkswagen distributor in Malaysia, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has launched its first product, the updated Volkswagen Jetta.
Available in three trim levels, Trendline, Comfortline and Highline, the new Volkswagen Jetta range is powered by a a 1.4-litre TSI turbocharged engine that outputs 150 PS and 250 Nm. When coupled with the 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG), the Jetta can sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 8.6 seconds, with a top speed of 220 km/h. By removing the supercharger, Volkswagen says that the new Jetta now sips just 5.0 litres/100 km. Further fuel savings comes from the included engine start/stop with regenerative braking.
The Jetta is the first model to feature Volkswagen’s new number designation, as it now wears a 280 TSI emblem. Sharp eyed readers will notice that the Jetta’s torque is in fact 250 Nm, so the number is just there as a designation. Other markets, the Jetta has the choices of engines with different outputs, but we do not get that luxury here. Think of it as the way BMW markets the 320 and 330i, as pointed out by our friends at Carlist.my.
Standard for all 3 variants of the updated Volkswagen Jetta is the safety equipment, which includes 6 airbags, ABS with Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill Hold Control, anti-theft alarm system with immobilizer, interior monitoring and towing protection, brake pad wear indicator, ISOFIX child seat mounts, a full-sized spare tire, safety-optimised front head restraints, 3-point rear seat belts plus seat belt reminder all round.
The entry-level Volkswagen Jetta is the Trendline. The Trendline is distinguished by its 16-inch Sedona alloy wheels with 205/55 R16 all round and halogen headlights. Inside the cabin, the Jetta 1.4 Trendtline gets Zebrano trim and Sienna fabric upholstery. Infotainment is backed by a RCD 220 radio with USB, SD card slot, AUX-In and 6 speakers.
Sitting above the Trendline is the Jetta 1.4 Comfortline. Here, the Jetta is fitted with 16-inch Navarra alloy wheels with 205/55/R16 tyres on the outside, coupled with automatic headlight activation with ‘Leaving Home’ function, automatic wipers and dark tail lights. As for the interior, the Comfortline is fitted with the RCD 330G radio with a 5-inch touchscreen display with USB and iPod interface, SD card slot, AUX-In, Bluetooth, MirrorLink and 6 speakers, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls and hands-free telephone controls, gear lever and handbrake. The Comfortline also adds Climatronic dual-zone air-conditioning.
The range-topping Jetta variant is the Jetta 1.4 Highline. This variant adds Queensland 17-inch alloy wheels with 225/45R17 tyres all round with Bi-xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights, headlamp washer system and LED tail lights. The interior receives Black Vienna leather upholstery inside, cruise control, “Keyless Access” with keyless locking and engine start and paddle shifters.
Four colours are available, namely Candy White, Platinum Grey, Reflex Silver and Deep Black. The entry-level Jetta Trendline will retail for RM108,990, while the Comfortline will have a price tag of RM117,990. The range-topping Jetta Highline will cost RM128,990. All prices exclude registration and insurance. Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia is backing the Jetta with a 5-year manufacturer warranty.
