Mazda has just taken the wraps off its new CX-9 midsize SUV that now comes enhanced with Mazda’s new 2.5-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine, called SkyActiv-G 2.5T.
Based on the naturally aspirated SkyActiv-G 2.5 featured in the Mazda6, SkyActiv-G 2.5T is the first turbocharged engine in the SkyActiv-G series. It delivers 250hp complemented by a whopping 420Nm of torque. More importantly, torque is easy to access in the lower part of the rev range, with peak twist coming in at just 2,000 rpm. It drops off rather suddenly north of 4,000 rpm, but as Mazda tells it, most consumers rarely venture above that figure. Power is sent to the front or all-wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The entire car rides on the same Skyactiv architecture as the CX-5 and Mazda6, meaning a multi-link rear suspension has been paired with MacPherson struts up front.
At 5065mm long, the new CX-9 is 30mm shorter than its predecessor, but its wheelbase has been stretched 55mm, benefiting passenger leg room as well as entry to and exit from the rear. The new CX-9 also carries shorter overhangs on both ends—59mm shorter up front and 25mm shorter in the rear—with its A-pillars shifted back 100mm, lengthening its hood and adding a sense of strength through proportions.
In terms of overall design, the CX-9 is undoubtedly one of the most handsome crossover on the market right now, featuring the company’s latest KODO design language that portrays a more premium image of the SUV.
The smooth lines start up front with a bold, five-point grille with double bars. They’re flanked on either side by standard low- and high-beam LED headlights. Moving to the rear, you can see gently flowing surfaces, rounded fenders, and a dynamic beltline. Other highlights include a tailgate-mounted spoiler, a dual exhaust system, and 18- or 20-inch alloy wheels.
Its interior is nothing short of breathtaking, with available Auburn-coloured Nappa leather, Japanese rosewood and aluminum splashed throughout the cabin. As mentioned in our earlier post, the CX-9 feature three row seating that allows for seven passengers to sit comfortably.
The three-row interior boasts higher-quality materials and a large piece of aluminum trim on the dashboard. The SUV also has redesigned front seats, LED accent lighting and a Mazda Connect infotainment system. The cabin is also significantly quieter than its predecessor as Mazda used thicker windows and 24 kg of sounding deadening mats.
