Whenever you are at the petrol station, the signs you would normally see would be the no smoking sign, the no handphone signs as well as signs to turn off your engine while refuelling. Of course, I know folks who constantly flaunt these rules but the most seriousness of offence would be the smoking rule.
If you remembered a movie which was banned in Malaysia starring Ben Stiller as Derek Zoolander, could you remember that there was a scene when his friends were playing with fuel at the station and blew themselves up thanks to someone wanting a smoke? That was definitely somewhat exaggerated but in real life even the smallest of incidents can cause a huge uproar.
In a recent report by the BBC, a video from a CCTV camera at a petrol station managed to film an incident. Apparently a lady went up to a guy who was fuelling up his car for a cigarette. The answer seemed to be “no” as she turned around and the next thing you know, she went up to the pump and used her lighter to light up the fumes.
The normal thing one would do is to panic in a situation like this and that was what the guy did. He pulled out the pump and thanks to the fuel leaking from the pump, the fire started spreading around. Now some folks may say that if he didn’t pull out the pump, the flames would just consume the fumes but I guess in that exact moment, the guy’s reflexes or instinct may be his bane.
