Ahh, the mid-life crisis. It’s the dreaded period faced by those middle age men and women who begin forking out big bucks on a new ‘flashy’ car. I’m pretty sure you’ve witnessed some of these people driving a sleek, sexy sports car or riding a Harley with a younger partner, ahem, but there’s more to it than that…
The mid-life crisis is said to be a period in every person’s life when they acknowledge the inevitability of their own demise. Thus, the obvious natural response is to go and splash-out on a fancy sports car to make themselves feel young again.
However, A recent study which questioned 1,005 adults from the United States and put together by Ipsos Public Affairs for CarMax found that men and women see this differently and have differing tastes and preferences when it comes to their mid-life crisis vehicles of choice.
According to the study, 25% of those who participated in the study said they were likely to buy a mid-life crisis car, although that’s the average of 30% of the men and 21% of the women.
It seems women aren’t into sports cars like men are, though, and their idea of a mid-life crisis car is an SUV, while 24% of men chose the obvious – a sports car.
Though we often think of red sports cars as the classic M-LC ride, when survey participants were asked about their choice colour for their hypothetical vehicle, red wasn’t at the top of the list. In fact, 20% said that they’d prefer black, and 19% opted for silver or gray. Blue and red tied, with each getting 17% of the vote.
Women also have different ideas about what constituted a great, youthful colour. Among men, 24% said that they’d opt for a black ride, while 21% of women chose red.
