The judging committee for the Proton Design Competition 2014 is currently evaluating the best submissions of budding young designers aged 13 to 25 years old. The Design Competition which was open for the span of 8 weeks, was officially closed on
18 August 2014. As an example, the above rendering of a possible future sports car from Proton is from http://hyraxsketch.blogspot.com – (Great job Firdaus! – Ed.)
Open only to secondary school pupils aged 13 to 17 years old (Category 1) and college students and youths aged 18 to 25 years old (Category 2), the competition hopes to unearth potential young talents in the area of automotive design. It is also held as a platform to expose Malaysian youths to the world of automotive design and nurture their interest at a young age.
“This is the first time for Proton to organise a design competition and we have received quite an encouraging response from the short period of submission. Overall, we got 337 submissions and between the two categories, our younger participants weren’t too far behind with 158 submissions compared to 179 from the older category,” said Dato’ Abdul Harith Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Proton.
Apart from the 3/4 front, rear and 3/4 side views of their city car design, participants also needed to present a written proposal of the design concept, the unique selling proposition of the car and the proposed engine system to be used in their concept. Category 2 participants also needed to submit an additional piece with the interior outlook of the car. The originality, innovation, aesthetics and presentation of the concept and proposal are key to being selected as winners.
Two sessions of shortlisting were carried out on 12 and 15 September 2014 for the 2 categories and another round of selecting the best 10 from each category will be carried out next before finalising the winning entries.
The winners of the competition will be notified by November 2014. Attractive prizes include MacBooks and cash rewards await the winners of each category. The winner in Category 2 also stands a chance to obtain an internship placement with the Design Team at Proton.
