Proton chairman, Tun Dr.Mahathir, has told a local newspaper that the next generation of the ever popular Proton Saga will be introduced within a year. The car codenamed as “Saga 3” will set to become Proton’s paradigm shift to become car manufacturer with high standards.
Tun Dr.Mahathir said that he would want Proton to manufacturer with better quality and not by producing cheap cars. He added that the company needs to produce a well accepted car by Malaysians while keeping the price and quality intact.
The Saga is undoubtedly Proton’s most crucial model and contributes to sales of around 5,000-6,000 units per month. However, times have been rather challenging for Proton as recently Proton executive chairman, Tan Sri Mohd Khamil Jamil admitted that margins of the cheapest Saga SV were so low (with profit of below RM500) that caused Proton’s profits to shrink.
The second generation Saga was introduced six years ago, and it’s about time for the new Saga to be introduced in 2015. It could be likely the new Saga will be based from the sedan version of the upcoming GSC (P2-30A) supermini model and will be the second model to utilize Proton new NFE powertrains.
