British sportscar maker, Ariel, will soon launch a limited-edition of the new lightweight two-seater, the Atom 3.5R. The Atom, which has been seen in quite a few incarnations, starting from Ariel Atom, Ariel Atom 2, Ariel Atom 3, Ariel Atom 3,5 and Ariel Atom 500 V8, is one lightweight sports cars that demands respect from its drivers.
The Ariel Atom 3.5R uses the similar engine from Honda Civic Type-R, coupled with a supercharger and new chargecooler allowing the car to produce an impressive 350bhp. A Sadev six-speed gearbox with the same Geartronic control mechanism were utilised, making lighting quick shifts possible. With the frame that weighs more than half a tonne, the Atom 3.5R has an enormous power-to-weight ratio of 636bhp per tonne, slightly more so than the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport which has 626bhp per tonne. The car scores high points in acceleration figures, with 0-100km/h claimed at just 2.6 seconds, and 0-160km/h is achievable in six seconds. Top speed is limited to 250km/h, but it will take the most daring driver to approach such speed with this maniacal power-to-weight ratio.
The suspension system has been improved, with the new dampers from Öhlins TTX were used which have in-line internal reservoirs rather than the familiar remote reservoirs. Special and grippy Kumho track high-performance tyres were used on the 3.5R to offer significant grip on the track. The car can be yours for £54,000 and delivery is expected by middle of Summer.
