Johor Premium Outlets (JPO) is set to become the ultimate EV charging hotspot in South-East Asia, with a whopping 500 charging stations rolling out by the end of the year. That’s right – if you drive an electric vehicle, this will be your go-to place for a quick power-up!
Genting Simon president and chief operating officer, Jean Marie Pin Harry, shared details on this game-changing project, revealing that the high-tech charging stations will take green mobility in Malaysia to the next level.
According to Pin Harry, the chargers are being installed in phases. The first phase kicked off last year, and 50 charging stations have already been installed.
“We aim to have all 500 charging stations operational within a year,” he shared with StarMetro during the official launch of the new charging stations at JPO in Kulai.
And here’s where it gets really exciting – these aren’t your average slow chargers. We’re talking ultra-fast direct current (DC) chargers ranging from 280kW to a mind-blowing 1MW. In fact, JPO is about to become home to South-East Asia’s very first public 1MW EV charger!
Older EVs used to take all night to charge. But with these charging stations, you can juice up in as little as five minutes, depending on your vehicle’s capability. That’s faster than grabbing a coffee!
The whole project is powered by a dynamic partnership with Yinson Greentech’s chargEV and DC Handal, ensuring that the stations are future-proofed for next-gen EVs. Plus, JPO isn’t stopping at car chargers – they’re electrifying their entire shuttle bus fleet, making it easier (and greener) for visitors to travel between the outlet mall and key transport hubs, including the Johor Baru checkpoints.
And if you don’t own an EV? No worries! Thanks to collaborations with GoCar and drivEV, you’ll soon be able to rent one by the hour or day, making sustainable transport more accessible to everyone.
With over 4.4 million vehicles from Singapore crossing into Malaysia last year, promoting EV adoption is more crucial than ever.
