After what felt like an eternity of teasing and foreplay, China’s homegrown supercar, the JMEV 01, has finally been given the official production green light by the Chinese government. And just like that, the beast was spotted tearing up the streets of Guangzhou during testing.
The JMEV 01 will be rolling off the production line at JMEV’s Nanchang facility, which has a 100,000-vehicle annual production capacity. Priced at approximately 300,000 yuan (RM 184,688), this EV supercar is set to shake up the scene. But the real question is—does it live up to the hype?
A Supercar With a Story
Originally conceived as the SC-01 by Tianjin Gongjianpai Auto Technology, with backing from tech giant Xiaomi, the project later underwent a transformation.
With Jiangling Motors (JMC) joining forces with Renault, the car was rebranded as JMEV 01—a performance-focused machine designed to go head-to-head with the MG Cyberster.
Compact, Lightweight, and Aerodynamic
This mid-engine electric supercar is just slightly bigger than a Mazda MX-5, measuring 4,106 mm long, 1,830 mm wide, and a sleek 1,170 mm tall. The JMEV 01 tips the scales at just 1,365 kg—a mere 25 kg heavier than the Porsche 718 Cayman, reinforcing its lightweight supercar credentials.
On the design front, JMEV has kept it sleek and sharp with aggressive headlights, circular taillights, and a classic two-door coupe silhouette.
Power, Performance & Lap Times
Under the hood (or rather, under the floor), the JMEV 01 packs dual synchronous permanent magnet motors from Empower, cranking out a combined 429 hp.
That power translates to a top speed of 200 km/h—not mind-blowing, but certainly quick enough to make its mark.
The real flex? When it hit Beijing’s Goldenport Park Circuit, it clocked a lap time of 1:06 minutes, putting it in the same ballpark as the Porsche 911 Carrera S. Now that’s some serious street cred.
Battery Tech & Driving Experience
Being an electric supercar, the JMEV 01 is powered by a mid-mounted ternary NMC battery from CALB, giving it a balanced weight distribution reminiscent of legends like the Toyota MR2 and Lotus Elise.
While battery capacity remains a mystery, the JMEV 01 claims a CLTC-rated range of 520 km (440 km WLTP) and supports fast charging from 30% to 80% in under 25 minutes—perfect for those who hate waiting around.
And for the driving purists? This EV isn’t just an all-wheel-drive machine—it offers multiple drive modes, including front-wheel, rear-wheel, and four-wheel drive configurations, plus a dedicated Sport mode for when you really want to let loose.
The Underdog Finally Gets Its Moment
This launch is huge for JMEV, a company that’s been grinding since 2015 to carve out its place in the cutthroat automotive industry. With a stylish, performance-focused EV at an accessible price, the JMEV 01 might just be China’s ultimate answer to the affordable supercar dream.
