It appears that there’s an ongoing trend where convertible versions of supercars have become more favourable than the coupe equivalent. McLaren introduced the sublime 12C Spyder which kinda made the 12C Coupe a forgotten car. The new Porsche 918 is a Spyder as well. Not to mention, the Italians have come out with very desirable supercar convertibles just like the Ferarri 458 Spyder, Lamborghini Avendator and so on.
This begs the question for supercars from the East, are they any of them worthy of going topless? While this is not official from Nissan, apparently California’s Newport Convertible Engineering (NCE) has an open-top solution for the Nissan GT-R. As these digitally rendered images from NCE suggest the possible shapes of the convertible GT-R.
Among the issues that plague convertible supercars, the most pressing is the additional weight it carries compared to the coupe, and changes in the rigidity structure that may compromise handling. More importantly, would buyers fancy a Nissan GT-R Spyder in the first place?
