All-new Volkswagen Atlas unveiled for North America

Earlier known as the Volkswagen Teramont, Volkswagen has just officially unveiled the all-new Atlas slated for the North America market.

This new Chattanooga-built Volkswagen is the company’s largest vehicle to be produced in America. Five trims levels will be available at launch, which includes two engine choices, namely a 2.0litre four-cylinder TSI turbo or the optional 3.6-litre VR6, both mated to an eight-speed automatic. According to the company, the smaller TSI is capable of producing 238 horsepower, while the larger VR6 outputs 280 hp. Power can be sent to either the front wheels or all four wheels via Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system in VR6 trim.

Built on the company’s Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform, the Volkswagen Atlas boasts a length of 5,036 mm, 1,978 mm width and 1,776 mm height. The Atlas is equipped with standard LED headlights and LED daytime running lights (DRL) with optional LED taillights to complete the look.

On the inside, the Volkswagen Atlas offers enough space for seven adults and their luggage, with a third-row seat which can be easily reached via an innovative folding seat solution, even with a child seat fitted to the second row seats. Volkswagen Digital Cockpit also makes an appearance here.

Infotainment is backed by Volkswagen’s App-Connect technology that integrates with the three major smartphone platforms, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto™and MirrorLink. The Atlas also features an optional Fender Premium sound system boasts 12 channels, a 480-watt amplifier and 12 speakers.

Safety is also impressive, as the largest SUV by Volkswagen includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist),Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning (Lane Assist) and Parking Steering Assistant (Park Assist). On top of that, the Volkswagen Atlas is the only vehicle in its segment to offer Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, which applies the brakes when a primary collision is detected by the airbag sensors, thus helping reduce residual kinetic energy and, in turn, the chance of additional damage.

The Volkswagen Atlas is built alongside the Volkswagen Passat at the company’s plant in Chattanooga.
