Remember the Nissan Sentra B13? No? Well, the Nissan Sentra B13 is known here as the Genting Taxi. Does that refresh your memory? Nissan is finally ceasing production of the iconic Sentra, after 25 years. No, really.
Due to the Mexican government’s new ruling which requires airbags and ABS to be present on new vehicles, Nissan is finally pulling the plug on the iconic Sentra, known as the Tsuru in Mexico.
In case you’re wondering, one of the key reasons why the Nissan Tsuru remained popular in Mexico is because of its cheap price, retailing at $7,000. In addition to that, running cost is relatively low for the Tsuru, apart from being near bulletproof.
According to The Truth About Cars, the Tsuru’s platform dates back all the way to the 80s, meaning that the ageing platform isn’t up to task with new safety features, including airbags and ABS. Furthermore, the structure of the vehicle is considerably weaker than rival vehicles. The new law, called NOM-194, requires safety features on new vehicles to meet EU and FMVSS standards, which effectively puts the ageing Tsuru into retirement.
The same laws also killed the iconic Volkswagen Kombi in Brazil.
