Thanks to the demand for SUVs in Europe, Jaguar won’t be offering wagon variants of its new sedan models.
Jaguar’s chief designer, Ian Callum said that the wagon market is shrinking, and its a very hard market to justify at this moment. To date, Jaguar has sold only two wagon variants. The first being the Jaguar X-type wagon sold in 2004, while the second wagon variant was based on the 2012 Jaguar XF sedan.
The new Jaguar XE and XF won’t be offered with a wagon body, unfortunately. Despite being built in the UK, British are less enthusiastic on wagon that folks from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. During the launch of the XF back in 2012, sales of wagon only accounted for 30 percent in Europe.
“The world’s biggest wagon market is Germany. And what do Germans buy? They buy German cars,” Callum said. That is a reference to Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, which offers a wagon variant of their main sedan models in Europe.
Jaguar Land Rover sales and marketing boss Andy Goss told Autonews Europe, “Wagons are not strong in the U.S. and China. But SUVs are strong in nearly every part in the world.”
“We will do things that will surprise you but it won’t be wagons,” added Callum.
