Suzuki Celerio set to replace Alto

Maruti Suzuki Celerio

At the Auto Expo in New Delhi,  Suzuki has revealed its new global city car dubbed Suzuki Celerio. The model will ultimately replace the Suzuki Alto, which is currently being phased out of the Japanese manufacturer’s lineup.

Maturi Suzuki – an Indian based manufacturer which is a subsidiary of Suzuki – already produces a Celerio for the India market. This global Celerio is identical to the India-spec model, meaning the underpinnings are likely to be adopted. Overall length should be around 3,600mm.

There is no official word on what engine will be fitted to the new model but the three-cylinder 68bhp 1.0-litre motor and five-speed manual gearbox from the outgoing Alto is a likely candidate. As the car is designed as a ‘global’ vehicle, the Celerio is likely to be much more affordable than the entry-level Alto. The main bulk of cost saving measures are likely to appear inside, with cheaper materials and less standard equipment.

Suzuki has been tight-lipped about the details of the Celerio but the Japanese company stated that it will feature “an exceptionally roomy interior for an A-segment car as well as low CO2 emissions continuing Suzuki’s reputation for pocket friendly motoring.”

You’ll soon find out more information on this new A-segment vehicle when makes its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March!
