Hyundai may have just launched the MY17 Elantra, but that has not stopped them from developing a hotter Elantra Sport, aimed squarely at the Honda Civic Si.
According to LeftLaneNews, the Hyundai Elantra Sport is could very well feature a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine pushing out 200 horsepower. The regular Elantra gets a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated 147 hp engine.
When launched later this year, buyers can opt for a six-speed manual or a semi-automatic dual-clutch transmission. Apparently, the Elantra Sport ditches the regular variant’s coupled torsion beam axle rear suspension for a independent rear suspension.
LeftLaneNews also reported that Hyundai could launch a hotter Elantra hatchback, which could be a less-powered Ford Focus ST alternative. But before that happens, Hyundai wants to see how well the Elantra Sport performs in the market, before committing to a sportier Elantra hatchback, as the Elantra sedan and hatchback do not share a common platform.
Expect the Hyundai Elantra Sport to debut at the 2016 SEMA show in Vegas at the end of the year.
