Remember folks, engineers spend hundreds of hours engineering cars so that they absorb the impact, spreading the force away from the occupants. Just because you see an accident vehicle badly mangled after an accident, the car has served its purpose, which is to protect the occupants. Spare a thought for the hardworking engineers in the background, who often do not receive enough credit for their hardwork.
