Traditional engine thinking is that size equals power, and that’s why Ford’s EcoBoost technology has amazed the skeptics. According to the automaker, the secret behind the sizzle is the combination of direct fuel injection, turbocharging, variable valve timing and a sophisticated suite of software. Aside from that, the Ford EcoBoost engines can also deliver significantly better fuel economy than the larger-displacement naturally aspirated engines they replace.
One of the most unforgettable EcoBoost-powered moments was the Formula FordEcoBoost at the Nürburgring. The specially tuned 1.0L EcoBoostrace car clocked the 11th fastest time at Germany’s legendary circuit. Its impressive time of just 7’22” beat the likes of the Lamborghini Aventador and Ferrari Enzo!
The company is now preparing to take the EcoBoost back to the track again. In 2016, Ford will return to Le Mans armed with the all-new Ford GT supercar to compete in LM GTE Pro class, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Ford’s 1966 overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. On top of its advanced aerodynamics and lightweight carbon fiber construction, the Ford GT will feature a new twin-turbocharged Ford EcoBoostV6 – the most powerful EcoBoost production engine ever.
