Suzuki Malaysia Automobile has stopped assembly at its Pekan production plant after the Memorandum of Understanding and License Agreement was signed between Proton and Suzuki back in June.
Sources said that Suzuki Malaysia has shut down the assembly line, and is considering ceasing the sales of CKD Suzuki models in Malaysia.
Proton signed an MOU with Suzuki back in June, in which the our local car manufacturer will get access to models, platforms, powertrains and automotive technology of Suzuki. Suzuki will also be providing technical assistance for the products and scope selected.
Speaking to Focus Malaysia, the stop in assembly is also caused by the low sales of Suzuki models in Malaysia. Proton is expected to launch their Suzuki-rebadged models next year.
Despite that, Suzuki Malaysia will not be closing down its service centres nationwide. The source also added that Suzuki will still be around to serve its existing customers.
Proton on the other hand, is said to be looking into the possibility of producing between 60,000 and 100,000 Suzuki models for both local and export markets.
