An intriguing study from DMEautomotive (DMEa) revealed that women and younger car owners in the United States are the most likely to give a nickname and associate a gender to their “vehicles”. The survey on car-naming behavior investigates the depth of the emotional connection between consumers and their cars as represented by the degree to which they personify and ascribe a gender to their vehicles.
After obtaining a sample size of approx 2,000 drivers, it is revealed that 1 out of 5 (around 400+ based on this sample figure) have given names to their rides. That one in five is likely to be female and between the ages of 18 and 24, and will name their cars starting with “B”.
Interestingly, while men showing their passion towards cars via driving it or giving goodies such as bodykits, performance upgrades or tyre rims, women instead shown their passion towards wheels by christen their vehicles, and associate a female gender with them. That makes me think about the perception of Malaysian female drivers towards their Myvi cars; would they think the same way with their American female counterparts?
p.s. I heard that one of our writers here, Mark Leo, names his car “Denise”.
