TMS 2015: Topless MINI Convertible debuts at Tokyo

Mini took the wraps off their new Convertible at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. But why choose Japan over other markets? Simple, sales of Mini is growing quicker than any other market worldwide.

Peter Schwarzenbauer, BMW AG board member for Mini and Rolls-Royce mentioned that sales increased 29 percent through September to 12,800 cars. Worldwide sales of Mini increased 18 % in the same period.

Compared to its predecessor, the Mini Convertible has grown 98 mm in length, 44 mm in weight and 1 mm taller. The tracks are also wider (+42 mm front and +34 mm rear) and coupled with the longer wheelbase (+28 mm), the new Mini offers a 25% increase in luggage space with the top closed.

Weighing 120 kg more than its closed-top siblings, the Mini Convertible’s performance will definitely take a hit. At launch, the Convertible are offered in three engine variants. This include a 134 hp 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol for the Cooper and a 189 hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol for the Cooper S, and 114 hp 1.5-litre 3-cylinder diesel for the Cooper D.
