Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today tabled the 2016 Budget. Among the highlights of his speech in terms of public transportation includes the allocation of RM28 billion for new MRT projects from Sg Buloh – Serdang – Putrajaya that spans 52km, which would benefit two million people. The construction are expected to begin in Q2 of 2016 and is expected to be completed by 2022.
The government has also approved the LRT3 project from Bandar Utama, Damansara – Johan Setia, Klang that spans 36 km which will benefit 2 million people with the estimated cost of RM10 billion. It will begin in 2016 and is expected to be ready in 2020.
The government will also continue negotiations regarding the KL-Singapore High Speed Rail line with Singapore.
The Budget 2016 also mentioned that the current 18.1km LRT extension from Ampang is expected to begin operation by March 2016. Meanwhile the connection project LRT via Kelana Jaya until Putra Heights (17.4km) will be in operation by mid 2016. Both of these projects cost RM10 billion ringgit.
The MRT Sg Buloh – Semantan on the other hand, will be in operation at the end of 2016. Meanwhile, phase 2 Semantan- Kajang MRT construction is expected to be completed by mid- 2017. This project that spans 51km is currently under construction coasting RM32 billion.
As for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), the government has allocated RM1.5 billion for this project that links KL to Klang. The government has also allocated RM1 billion for the BRT line in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, too.
