Porsche demonstrates its Rear-Axle-Steering System [+video]

Porsche 911 Carrera

Rear-wheel steering is nothing new on a Porsche, or any sports car for that matter, it’s been around since the 80’s, but if you wanted to know how it works, Porsche has released a new video highlighting the qualities of its rear axle steering system in the new Porsche 911 Carrera, and it’s really cool.

Basically, at low speeds the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the fronts, in order to boost maneuverability and reduce the amount of steering lock you have to apply resulting much easier exiting or entering a parking space. As speed builds up, they switch to turning in the same direction to the front wheels in order to boost high speed cornering stability.

The rear axle-steering system is reserved exclusively for the 911 Turbo and 911 GT3 models, but now it is also available on request for all 911 Carrera S models. (Those on a tight budget can scour the classifieds for a 80’s Honda Prelude 4WS to experience it for themselves first-hand… – Ed.)
