Barely a year ago, we attended Asia Klasika, touted as Malaysia’s own Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, thanks to the impressive collection of classic and rare cars. Just over the weekend was the second iteration of Asia Klasika, and we were there to check it out.
Compared to the 1983 Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer BB 512i, which was one of the star cars from last year, we feasted our eyes on a early 1990s Jaguar XJ220. If you don’t already know, the Jaguar XJ220 is one of the most iconic cars from the nineties. Seeing the XJ220 in flesh is akin to seeing a real life unicorn. This particular Jaguar XJ220 belongs to the Sultan of Johor, and is painted in a shade of dark blue, finished off with gold rims.
Other highlights of the show includes the brand-new Jaguar F-Tyre Project 7, which made its first-ever appearance in Malaysia. Under the hood, power is supplied by a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine, now in 575 PS/680 Nm form, enabling the all-aluminium-bodied car – which weighs 1585 kg – to achieve acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 3.9-seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 300 km/h. Price? A cool RM3 million, without insurance.
Elsewhere, we spotted a bone-stock BMW E30 M3, a rare Alpina B3 BiTurbo Touring, the first Proton Saga to roll of Proton’s plant and even a Jaguar D-Type! This particular Jaguar D-Type, according to sources, crashed while racing back in the fifties here in Malaysia, and is still on a painfully slow road to recovery.
Then there’s the rare Zagato SZ. If it wasn’t for the signature Alfa Romeo grille, I’d be hard pressed to identify it as one. The Zagato SZ was designed by the collaboration work of Centro Stile Zagato, Centro Stile Alfa Romeo and Centro Stile Fiat. A total of 1,036 SZs were made, and all were finished in red, with a tan leather interior.
