Over the weekend, the streets of Kuala Lumpur was alive with the sound of V8 Supercars, Formula Masters China, GT3 cars and various Lamborghini racers, including the new Huracan GT3. This marked the inaugural KL City Grand Prix which was definitely an eye-opener for not just local folks, but also foreign visitors.
The weekend was not without action, as Fairuz Fauzy’s Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 got into a serious accident that halted the race. Despite the massive accident, Fairuz managed to secure a loaned Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo GT3 which he piloted to an impressive second place! “It was a tough weekend for us and I am happy all came out well. We had problems from day one. Our first practice was cancelled and I had the least track time among the drivers. I missed qualifying yesterday after my big shunt and I thought my weekend was over. I only got news this morning that I got a car on loan. In the race, I was not pushing and only drove like 70 per cent as I just don’t want to have any problem with the car. It’s a great result for me,” said Fairuz.
Moving onto the Australian V8 Supercars Street Challenge, Todd Kelly of Nissan Motorsport secured the overall win, with Scott McLaughlin of Volvo Polestar Racing coming in close in second position. Five V8 Supercars were shipped from Down Under to Kuala Lumpur for its inaugural debut, with the full-blown racing series planned for the 2016 season.
In the competitive Formula Masters China Series, Martin Rump took first place in Race 2 and 3, putting him in top spot with 191 points. Jake Parsons of Meritus GP was in second place with 137 points while third place went to Absolute Racing’s Belgian Alessio. Every FMCS car is identical, with the same FPT 414TF 1.4-litre turbocharged engine pumping out 180 hp.
Lastly, in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo, local driver Afiq Yazid got denied a win after getting bumped into the wall by Kazuki Hiramine. Anthony Liu and Davide Rizzo secured a podium finish as Kazuki was handed a 30-second penalty. Toshiyuki Ochiai finished in second place, while Dilantha Malagamuwa and Armaan Ebrahim finished third.
