According to a report by Reuters, Waze, the social mapping app has started testing on a new pilot program, carpooling. Waze is owned by Google overall and has been the talked about app here in Malaysia especially if we want to beat the traffic.
As a pilot, the program should be able to give an indication on how fast it can or may not scale as well as get the participation of the masses to get this acceptable. While locally the authorities and protestors have been fighting against ride sharing app, Uber, as well as GrabCar, having the term car pooling might be a little more acceptable.
There are of course other car pooling apps in the market such as Carma Car Pooling and iCarPooling, who knows, if this takes off, it might alleviate some of the traffic we face in the city on a daily basis. What would make it a success is that the app helps and automatically calculates best routes and trips for a group of carpoolers as well as help split costs such as toll, fuel and parking.
I hope one such as that takes off soon.
