One thing I am always impressed by Toyota is their commitment to safety via their safety education centre located at the Fuji Speedway. It recently turned ten in April this year, meaning for the last 10 years it has served over 50,000 people while aiming to raise awareness of the importance of traffic safety through a unique combination of classroom instruction, practical driving training and other activities.
Acknowledging the milestone, President Akio Toyoda commented: “I would like to express my gratitude to everybody who has visited mobilitas, and to the partners who have supported our work. Due to the wide variety of programs available, visitors can learn the importance of safety and also experience the fun of driving. As an automaker, safe driving is of paramount importance to us. With your help, we will continue to make it our priority.”
As car manufacturers can install as many safety equipment, the underlying area are always the people. In Malaysia we have high number of traffic fatalities especially with motorcyclists. But whenever you see how some of them ride especially in the city, simply weaving in and out of traffic and disregarding their own safety or even worse, some of them not wearing helmets, we can’t help but come to the conclusion that no matter how much tech and safety is placed, the mindset of the people needs to be changed first. And Toyota recognises this to be one of the key equations.
Toyota believes that the elimination of traffic fatalities and injuries is the ultimate goal of a society that values mobility. In order to meet that goal, safety activities need to focus on three key areas: people, cars, and the traffic environment. This training facility focuses primarily on one part of that equation: people.
On weekdays, the center chiefly caters to corporations and other groups, while members of the public typically visit on weekends. Toyota Driver Communication courses have in fact been held since 1987, but were relocated to mobilitas since the facility opened in 2005.
To celebrate its tenth anniversary, mobilitas is running a special campaign from June 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016. All participants who attend a course during the campaign will be presented with a small gift. In addition, students will be eligible for 50% discounts on some courses, with the goal of making the facility’s activities available to less experienced drivers.
