Those old enough is bound to remember the Porsche 959, as it was a definite icon of the 1980s. One such unit went under the hammer at the Spa Classic Sale at Circuit at Spa Francorchamps, Belgium.
The Porsche 959 was conceived at the glorious Group B era, and was displayed as a concept car at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show. Despite the death of Group B, the Porsche 959 entered limited production in 1987.
Philip Kantor, Bonhams European Head of Motoring said, “This is an extremely original example, having remained with its first registered owner from new. This 1980s supercar is the rarest and most revolutionary Porsche, and this year it celebrates its 30th anniversary so it’s the perfect time to acquire such a fantastic car. With eight exciting Porsche offered at the upcoming Spa Classic Sale, it’s a wonderful event for any collector.”
Under the skin of the Porsche 959 is very different from its rival, the Ferrari F40. While the Ferrari F40 was basically a bodyshell wrapped around a twin-turbo V8, the Porsche 959 was the polar opposite. The Porsche 959 had a 2,849 cc six cylinder boxer engine which features twin turbochargers. Power output was 450 bhp. Standard equipment on the Porsche 959 included electric windows and mirrors, climate control, electric heated seats and stereo system.
Luxuries aside, the Porsche 959 was also packed with tech. The four wheel drive system on the 959 is computer controlled and features variable torque splitting. Even the ride height can be altered electronically. This particular Porsche 959 was built in 1988.
The auction was held over the weekend, and this example was sold for €700,000 (MYR 2,800,909).
