England’s Andrew Johnston was left literally jumping for Joy after winning a top-of-the-range BMW M4 for landing a hole in one at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth today.

Nicknamed ‘Beef’, the 26-year-old Englishman could not believe his luck as his well-struck seven-iron found the hole from 168 metres at the par-three 10th of Wentworth’s iconic West Course. The ball took one bounce, hit the flag and went straight in.

Such was the player’s delight that it sparked what will probably go down as one of the most flamboyant of celebrations seen this year. After an impromptu little dance Johnston, who lies 68th on the Race to Dubai rankings, sprinted off the tee to bump chests with a friend he had spotted in the gallery. “I just saw him and thought, ‘Right. Now is the time to go.’ It was perfect timing,” he said.

This was Johnston’s second hole in one in the professional ranks. The first one won him 168 bottles of champagne at last year’s Scottish Open, although he didn’t reveal if he had kept any on ice for just such a moment. With a 106,500 euros price tag, the M4 tops anything he has won as a professional so far. Little wonder, then, that he was so happy.
