Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has introduced the new generation CLS 400, now equipped with a new 6-cylinder petrol engine, assistance systems, and futuristic Multibeam LED headlamps. But there’s more…it’s clairvoyant. Wait, what?
Designed and developed by Mercedes-Benz, the new Multibeam LED headlamps can be optionally adjusted to suit any road and traffic conditions. It ensures broad and bright illumination of the road surface and edge of the roadway for high performance and precision without dazzling other car drivers.
Unlike normal headlamps, each Multibeam LED headlamp contains a module for the low-beam headlamp, which can be swivelled upwards up to 12 degrees. This provides an active light function, which is also camera-controlled. It offers a preview function which already swivels the active light function when the driver has not turned the wheels. The bend is therefore illuminated effectively as soon as possible.
This active light function will also swivel back to the straight-on position before the corner ends, allowing the driver to identify dangers earlier when entering and exiting bends. The anticipatory control allows an additional range of between 30 and 60 metres, depending on the traffic situation. Another unique feature is used at roundabouts: before entering onto a roundabout, the cornering light function is activated to the left and right to provide the best visibility at an early stage.
One charming feature of the new Multibeam LED headlamps is that, in addition to providing daytime running lamps, side lights and turn signal lamps via multifunctional fibre-optic cable, they also welcome the driver by casting a blue light when the vehicle is unlocked.
Inside the cabin, driver’s will be able to find a new, free-standing 8-inch colour display in the head unit. It works in conjunction with a Comand Online system that enable the internet to be surfed without restrictions when the vehicle is stationary. A Bluetooth-capable mobile phone with data option is all it takes. Equally new is a now standard and integral Media Interface for connecting an iPod or iPhone.
Other new features include a redesigned three-spoke sports steering wheel and a host of other exquisite details, which contribute to the interior’s high quality look and feel.
Under the hood, the CLS 400 houses a new 3.0-litre, V6 bi-turbo petrol engine which delivers 333 hp and 480 Nm torque. When mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission, the CLS 400 is capable of spritning from 0-100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds before reaching a top speed of 250km/h. Fuel consumption is also kept at low, it returns, 7.2-7.1-litre/100km as quoted by the automaker.
In order to make top class safety accessible to all, the CLS 400 is equipped with a host of new and enhanced assistance systems. Standard fit features include Collision Prevention Assist Plus while the latest assistance systems found in the the S-Class are also available as standard feature. These include Distronic Plus with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, Pre-Safe Brake with pedestrian detection, Pre-Safe Plus, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, Active Parking Assist with Parktronic including parking in end-on spaces.
