Fresh from the 2015 Bangkok International Motor Show is Mazda’s latest model, the Mazda 2. Unlike the ones we are familiar with, Mazda showed the new SkyActiv-G 1.3 model, which is placed below their SkyActiv-D models.
Mr. Hidesuke Takesue, President of Mazda Sales (Thailand) Co. Ltd., said “The 1.5-liter SKYACTIV Clean Diesel engine is enjoying tremendous popularity and we are completing the Mazda2 model range with the introduction of the 1.3-liter SKYACTIV-G engine which offers outstanding performance of 93hp/ 5,800 rpm with the highest torque of 123 nm/ 4,000 rpm. It is an efficient gasoline engine that offers fuel economy of 23.3 kilometers per liter. It comes with a host of standard safety features both active and passive safety. The Mazda2 SKYACTIV-G 1.3L offers eco-friendliness with just 100g/km of carbon dioxide emissions allowing it to be the first model in Thailand to pass the stringent EURO 5 emission standards. This makes the Mazda2 a premium model in the B-segment that exceeds customer expectations, and it will penetrate the market as the top pick in its segment.”
The new 1.3-litre SkyActiv-G engine produces 93 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 123 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. Power is transferred from the engine via a 6-speed automatic which drives the front wheels. Mazda claims that the new engine is capable of delivering up to 23.3 km/L of fuel economy. The i-stop idling stop system and the i-ELOOP Brake Energy Regeneration System also helps to enhance fuel economy. Sport mode is standard across the range for the new Mazda 2 SkyActiv-G 1.3.
The rest of the Mazda 2 SkyActiv-G 1.3 remains identical to the SkyActiv-D 1.5, with the exception of the wheels, as all 1.3 models will be getting 15-inch wheels, while the 1.5 models gets both 15 and 16-inch wheels.
Mazda will be offering the new Mazda2 in 6 different grades, with the 5-door hatchback and 4-door sedan getting three trim levels each. Furthermore, buyers can choose from eight different body colours, namely Soul Red, Snowflake White Pearl, Titanium Flash, Dynamic Blue, Aluminum Metallic, Black Mica, Arctic White and Metropolitan Grey.
Price wise, the new Mazda 2 SkyActiv-G 1.3 Sports Standard Hatchback will have a base price of 550,000 Baht (~RM62,000 before tax), while moving one level up to the Sports High Hatchback will cost 610,000 Baht (~RM69,000 before tax). The range topping Mazda 2 SkyActiv-G 1.3 Sports High Plus Hatchback will set buyers back for 665,000 Baht (~RM75,000 before tax). The sedan model sports the same price as the hatchback model.
Will Bermaz bring in the SkyActiv-G 1.3 models into Malaysia as a cheaper model? If priced competitively, we can foresee the Mazda 2 1.3 models selling well.
