Sunday Musings – Tyres, Tyres, Tyres Part 6

This is a follow up piece of my tyre review articles. Do check out my earlier articles to get a better context of the story.

My car’s mileage just recently hit 95,000km two weeks ago. That translate to me using these set of Goodyear Asymmetric 2 tyres for a good 20,000km. When I had my car serviced the other day, I did a quick inspection of the tyre and from a visual inspection, there seem to be quite a fair bit of thread left.

I was pretty much impressed on how long it lasts especially after using them for 20,000km as well as trying it out on the track at Sepang F1 Circuit as well.

Simply put, these tyres do last long and still maintains it’s grip after so long. Noise levels are also still bearable on the roads and highways hence the tyre hasn’t degraded that much yet.

I also believe that how long a tyre lasts depends on how a driver drives his car. I have friends who go through multiple sets of tyres over a period of 1 year or just shy of 40,000km. When prices of tyres were high, I believed in trying to preserve my tyres as long as I can. Still, the announcement that tyre prices are going down isn’t going to change my habit.

In the images above you can see a little scrubbing on the side, I believe that to be caused by my careless driving during the recent trackday in Sepang. Normally I would have a separate set of tyres just to use on the track but due to circumstances (my car was used for a friend’s wedding) that one time, I had to bring my road tyres in.

I was a little too careless on the track at Sepang and went into the corners a little hot. This caused my car to understeer and eat a fair bit of my tyres. Also a friend of mine was trying to show me the optimum lines but due to the track being a little slippery, we spun a couple of times after turn 4, just before entering into turn 5.

Considering all of that, I am surprised the tyres still had that much thread in them as well as maintained its daily drive grip. I definitely can’t wait to participate in more weekend drives and continue to provide more feedback on these tyres.
