In approximately 12 years and 9 months after production of the first-generation Mazda6 began in February 2002 at Hofu Plant No. 2 in Yamaguchi, Japan, Mazda is proud to announce that the Mazda6 (also known as the Mazda Atenza in Japan), has reached a milestone figure of 3 million units at the end of November 2014. This happens to be the second fastest time for a Mazda model to reach 3 million units of production, following the Mazda3 (Mazda Axela in Japan).
The first-gen Mazda6 sold 1,945,850 units until 2007, when it was replaced by the second generation that was less successful, with 718,882 deliveries. The third generation was launched in 2012 and has, so far, sold 335,773 units worldwide. The model is currently produced at Hofu Plant in Japan and FAW Car Co. Ltd. in China. Additionally, it is assembled locally at MAZDA SOLLERS Manufacturing Rus in Russia and Vina Mazda Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in Vietnam.
Mazda also announced that an updated Mazda6 will be rolled out to global markets from January 2015, with launches starting from Japan and USA. According to the Japanese automaker, the refreshed Mazda6 will feature a more refined design expression, enhanced dynamic performance for a more comfortable, higher-quality ride, the Mazda Connect new-generation car connectivity system and i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety technologies.
