Lamborghini Asterion might enter production after all

News of the Lamborghini Asterion is not new, as the car already made a global debut back in October at the Paris Motor Show. Stephan Winkelmann mentioned that if and when the Asterion is brought to mass market, it will undercut prices of it’s main competition, namely the McLaren P1 and the Porsche 918 Spyder.

Powered by the same 5.2 L V10 that is also found in the Huracan, the Asterion has 2 front mounted electric motors that drives the front wheels. Other new additions include a lithium-ion battery pack and a new 7-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox which houses the 3rd electric motor. The Lamborghini Asterion is said to produce some 910hp thanks to its electric motor and petrol engine combination.

The hybrid system in the Asterion adds another 250 kg to the transmission’s overall weight, but performance remains top notch. Standstill to hundred is said to be achieved in 3 seconds flat, before reaching a top speed of 320 km/h. Torque output remains unknown for now.

Lamborghini’s head of research and development Maurizio Reggiani said, “The motors work with the plug-in to assist the engine, but also support the dynamics with torque vectoring on the front wheels. The motors can run at different speeds and with different torque levels, improving the agility of the car through the speed at which you can enter and exit a corner.”

For the electric car fans however, a pure electric Lamborghini Aventador won’t be appearing any time soon, as Reggiani said that today’s batteries are too big and too heavy for a super-sports car. “Maybe over the next few years suppliers will drive down the cost and weight, but today super-sports cars cannot accept the weight and price of batteries. I think the Asterion really works,” he said.

All of these were made possible thanks to the positive feedback that Lamborghini received from both the media and public about the Asterion. One step closer for the Asterion to enter production, then.
