Suffice to say, the Proton Suprima S has not been doing well despite being in the market for more than a year. Even though it is one of the best-equipped Protons we have seen, its ambitious pricing is why Malaysians are shunning this hatchback. To remedy that, Proton is set to reveal a cheaper version of the Suprima S hatchback with a new “Standard” trim.
What sparked our interest here is the leaked specification sheet of the upcoming Proton Suprima S Standard, and honestly it doesn’t look very promising.
Whilst the standard variant retains the similar 1.6-litre Campro CFE turbocharged engine and the 7-speed Protonic CVT gearbox (no manual gearbox, unfortunately), the apparent deficit are the safety features, with both Electronic Stability Control (ESC) & Traction Control (TC) being omitted and the airbag count has been reduced from six to just two. This is disappointing knowing that Proton managed to provide ESC and TC as standard across the range with the Iriz.
Tons of other goodies are removed as well, which includes the YES 4G Internet, GPS touchscreen navigation, window tint, front map lamp and even the engine cover. On the outside, the front fog lights and LED position lights are excluded from the Standard variant. No word on the tyres, but do expect a similar 16-inch setup as the Executive trim.
Proton is set to price this car below RM70,000. Currently, the Suprima S starts at RM76,760.05 (Executive) to RM87,942.95 (Super Premium). The Proton Suprima S Standard is set to be launched this Saturday so stay close for more updates!
